UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers

The All-Party Parliamentary Human Rights Group (PHRG), the Rule of Law APPG and the Law Society of England and Wales organised an off-the-record discussion with Diego García-Sayán, UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, on 22 November, 2017.

We would like to thank Rt Hon Dominic Grieve QC MP, Vice-Chair PHRG and Chair Rule of Law APPG for chairing this meeting.

The attendees discussed the UN Special Rapporteur’s work, and explored what the UK Government and Parliamentarians could do to support him, as well as to promote and protect judicial independence across the world, and to support judges and lawyers at risk of interference with their professional duties and human rights violations for their work more generally.

The PHRG will continue to support judges and lawyers at risk for upholding rule of law in their countries, and to raise concerns with relevant interlocutors.
